We asked some of our experienced managers about what characterises their most outstanding staff.

Compassion – are you a ‘people’ person?

All our managers agree that this is one of the top traits they see in their best staff:

The staff are very compassionate and caring, which is a must for this line of work. They have an understanding of others’ emotions.
Michelle

They need to be kind and compassionate, be able to really listen and want the very best for the people they support.
Mandy

Compassion and empathy is important – the ability to stand side by side with someone.
Stuart

Do you need experience and training in social care to apply?

Arriving with experience is not essential, say our managers – you will gain training and experience with Livability, if you’re right for the job.

We have a mix of staff – some come qualified, others with no care experience at all, like Louise and Wendy, who are outstanding members of my team. You can have qualifications coming out of your ears but if you’re not a people person, qualifications don’t get you very far.
Helen

The majority of staff in my services have come from a local college, with very little or no experience.
Michelle

About 70 per cent of our staff are new to social care when they join us. I look for common sense, life experience and initiative, and the right attitude.
Mandy
