What is the TCS London Marathon Ballot?

April 4 2024

There is a definite buzz in the air—a sense of excitement and motivation. The London Marathon is an event like no other, with an expected 50,000 runners set to take to the streets of London on 21 April and thousands more as spectators. It is an unforgettable experience for everyone involved, especially for the runners.

It’s London Marathon Season! But what does that mean for those who want to participate in 2025?

Are you wondering how you can be part of the most popular marathon on the planet? It’s well known that supporting your favourite charity by applying for one of their charity places is an option, but you might have also heard about ‘The Ballot’…
What is the TCS London Marathon Ballot?

The TCS London Marathon Ballot is like The National Lottery – you enter along with thousands of others and then the lucky winners are chosen at random. If successful, you are allocated a place in the next marathon event. You then simply have secure your spot.

Entering the ballot is free

If you are successful, the cost of a place in the event is £69.99 for UK residents. However, if you opt to donate your entry fee to the London Marathon Foundation, this cost will reduce to £49.99 and you will also be entered into a second ballot, doubling your chance of securing a place.

When does the ballot open?

The ballot dates for the 2025 TCS London Marathon haven’t been released yet. However, it is usually the day after the event, with results issued in July. Keep a keen eye on the London Marathon website for updates.

What are your chances of getting a ballot place in the London Marathon?

The London Marathon doesn’t specify the precise allocation of ballot spots, but it’s estimated that about half of the 40,000+ runners, roughly 17,000-20,000, secure their places via the ballot. The remaining slots are typically filled through charity gold bonds and other means.

Unsuccessful in the ballot?

It can be disappointing if you don’t get allocated an entry in the London Marathon. But you can still take part as a member of Team Livability! Click here to register your interest.
