The ten VEC students are part of a young person’s dance group called ‘’Remix’’, which brings together disabled students with students from mainstream schools.

‘’Remix’’ have joined forces with disabled adults dance group ‘’Double-act’’ to form the Breathe Project and perform at the opening ceremony. For the ceremony the Breathe Project will also be joined by actors and two Brazilian dance groups, APAE and Estacao Dancar, for a 45 minute live performance.

To prepare for the performance, one of the VEC students, David Young, recently travelled to the Brazilian school where APAE are based. The 2-week trip to the Brazilian island of Florianopolis took place thanks to a grant by the British Arts Council.

Chris Davies, Victoria Education Centre and Sports College principal, said, “It is fantastic that our students are going to be involved in the local Olympics Opening Ceremony. The dancers are all working really hard to plan and deliver a fantastic performance on the day.’’

David Young spoke of his experience: “I love drama and working with the Brazilians was a fantastic for me. I loved Florianopolis, it’s very beautiful. I hope I can go back one day to teach them all about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) as they were amazed by my communication book and my eye gaze speech aid.’’
