Physiotherapist to run the London Marathon in aid of Livability’s brain injury rehabilitation service

Every year, thousands of runners take to the starting line in Greenwich, South East London for the Virgin London Marathon. Rachel Baynes from Suffolk is running her maiden marathon for Team Livability. We asked her what she’s most looking forward to ahead of the event.

Why are you running the London Marathon?

I am a Physiotherapist Clinical Specialist at Livability Icanho – a specialist rehabilitation service for adults after an acquired brain injury or stroke. I am very passionate about my job and every day I am inspired by the people that use the service, following the devastating effects of a brain injury.

I am equally moved by the dedication and support that families, friends and carers provide to their loved one’s journey of recovery. As a result I am running the London Marathon for Livability Icanho.

What’s training been like for the big day?

Marathon training has been enjoyable although challenging at times – especially as I broke my wrist back in February!

I love going out early in the morning when no one else is about and I have the Waveney Valley countryside and wildlife all to myself. It’s very uplifting.

As my runs became longer I came to realise that it’s easy to get lost on the rural Suffolk lanes. On one occasion recently I managed to get lost and ended up asking a kind gardener if I could borrow his phone to contact my “back up team” – my family – to come and rescue me!

What are you most looking forward to?

I am incredibly excited to be part of the London Marathon on Sunday. I’m most looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere, the comradery amongst runners, hearing everyone’s motivations and seeing the sights of London!

I’m not looking to finish in a competitive time, I just want to savour the experience of the day!

The London Marathon – a personal challenge

I am an active person most happy being outside in the countryside with my husband and 2 daughters. I play hockey, enjoy horse-riding and even teach pilates.

This is the first time I am running the London Marathon. I will be running on my own but I do have friends running for other charities but they are athletes and I won’t keep up with their blazing pace!

What would you like to achieve by completing the marathon?

As a physiotherapist I think the body is totally amazing and I am intrigued to challenge mine, both physically and mentally, to complete the marathon. I want to experience that sense of achievement, as well as raise more profile of Livability and Livability Icanho.

I’m also keen to raise funds for which can help contribute to equipment like a harness for bodyweight supported treadmill training at Livability Icanho. It’s exciting to think how it could offer more people with an acquired brain injury the opportunity to begin their journey to recovery.
