Celebrating our people – A Livability manager that provides outstanding care for the people we support
Michelle is an Acting Practice Manager with Livability’s residential care services. With an infectious laugh and winning manner, she’s a born motivator. Joining Hallgate and Beaumont Court, two residential services in Northumberland, just 13 months ago, her hard work and determination has had a hugely positive impact on her staff and the people they support. So much so that she recently gained recognition in Livability’s The Princess Royal Awards for staff and volunteers.
Starting as Practice Team Leader, almost immediately Michelle found herself in the position of Acting Practice Manager for the two services. She put time and effort in to develop and recruit staff and build their skills, encouraging a renewed sense of motivation and engagement with their work. The result is newly committed and stable teams and improved wellbeing and health outcomes for residents.
Her drive to excel and improve standards is well known among her colleagues. ‘Michelle always strives for more, she is never satisfied,’ says Practice Director, Stuart Dryden. ‘She believes things can always be better and this is the secret of her success. She never rests on her laurels.’
It’s not just the staff at the services who appreciate Michelle’s approach. The residents and their families are equally impressed. ‘For the people supported at both services, it is clear that they see Michelle as someone they can trust, who listens to them and puts them first,’ says Stuart.
Michelle has started a regular newsletter about the services for the families and friends of residents. They know that their loved ones are in safe hands, looked after by staff that really care about them. ‘Keeping families involved in people’s lives is vital,’ says Director of Operations, Jane Percy. ‘Michelle goes the extra mile to make sure this happens.’ Stuart agrees. ‘Michelle is personally interested in all the residents,’ he says. ‘She has supported them to achieve their personal goals – from going on holiday to horse riding.’
The changes implemented by Michelle have not only impacted staff and those they support. Health care professionals, including CQC inspectors, are also impressed by the quality of care and the running of the homes under her leadership. ‘Michelle is an inspiration to me, to people she manages and the people she supports,’ says Stuart. ‘The care and support of the people living at Hallgate and Beaumont Court is safe in her hands.’
Michelle received a special award from HRH The Princess Royal. Nominated by her peers, Michelle received an award from the HRH The Princess Royal at a ceremony held at Livability’s national office on 7th March 2017.
