At Livability’s services, great wellbeing is one of the ways we gauge how good our care is, for people we support with disabilities. Supporting people to be active, learning and connected with others is a priority. During lockdown, staff got creative with new, often digital, ways to have fun and keep busy, something which has formalised into a new role of Activities Resources Planner.
Lee Ashcroft, who formerly worked at Livability Treetops, our Essex residential care home, is the first in this post for the south and east regions.
Lee’s plans include tried and tested online sessions, such as storytelling, exercise classes and access to live streamed entertainment. Lee is developing the programme with participative Zoom cookery sessions, which will rely on staff support along with a taskforce of local volunteers which he is starting to recruit. Activities packs are also in the pipeline, going out to each service, with seasonal ideas and resources. ‘We want to make sure all the people we support have access to activities that promote and improve their wellbeing,’ says Lee. ‘The programme will be available to all Livability services.’
Lee’s role means he liaises with people we support, with our chaplaincy team and with staff like Nicole, an Enabling Support Worker, who has started to lead online activities sessions at Livability Anvil House, with older, non-verbal adults. ‘I wanted to find some fresh ideas for our residents from Zoom activity sessions. I thought it sounded interesting and I shadowed a couple of sessions with another staff member leading. It helped me gauge what would work for the ability levels of people here and now I’ve led a couple of sessions myself.
‘People we support from all over the country come to the Zoom sessions, from a wide range of contexts including supported living, residential etc. I find the activities can be adapted for anyone of any age and mobility, with a little bit of adjustment. We did some silly fun things like party dances, and finished with a calming, mindfulness relaxing session. People love joining with others from different services. Taking part will be fun, both for people we support and staff who are involved’
