From Thursday 7th to Sunday the 17th of February Livability is auctioning oodles of spectacular celebrity postcards on eBay.

We asked various high-profile individuals to draw, write or doodle anything they wanted on a blank postcard, as long as it was some kind of response to the question: “As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?’’.  The upshot was immense and we were inundated with a plethora of unique and wonderful postcards from well-known actors, musicians, writers, athletes, comedians and other big name celebrities.

Some of the responses we received were laugh out loud funny whilst others were quite fascinating. Joanna Lumley for example once thought it would be absolutely fabulous to pull pints for a living whilst Carol Vorderman was counting down the days until she could become a fighter pilot. As well as some beautiful hand drawn sketches and personal messages from the stars themselves, the postcards offer a genuine insight into what some stars could have been had they followed their childhood dreams.

Although at first glance it may seem like a bit of an oddball theme for a charity auction, it aims to highlight the fact that disabled young people and adults have dreams and hopes for the future just like everyone else. However, they often struggle to fulfil their true potential. Disabled people are more than twice as likely to leave school with no qualifications and three times more likely to be living below the poverty line than their non-disabled counterparts. So despite dreaming big, disabled people still have more obstacles standing in their way stopping them from making their dreams a reality.

Joanna LumleyDave Webber, Interim Chief Executive at Livability said: ‘’We are delighted that so many high profile individuals decided to help us raise awareness of disability issues.

As a charity our aim is to help disabled people achieve their full potential. There are still many barriers that prevent them from doing so and with our Let Me in campaign, we want to change this for the better.’’

The auction is part of Livability’s newly launched LET ME IN campaign which aims to help remove some of the barriers that still limit disabled people’s achievements and quality of life.

Other stars that took part in the project include: Dame Judi Dench, John Malkovich, Gordon Ramsay, Noel Fielding and Labrinth to name but a few.

After the 17th of February you will still be able to bid for the postcards on the Livability website and all proceeds will go towards supporting disabled children, young people and adults in the UK.

The postcards can be found on eBay at www.livability.org.uk/postcards until 17th February and on the Livability website once the auction ends.
