VEC students came out as victors of the National Table Cricket tournament held at Lords this year (2014). They overcame 9 other schools and over 80 other pupils at a number of different local heats before finally coming out champions at the final on Friday 27th June.
Table cricket is a game played on a table tennis table with side panels, sliding fielders, a ball launcher, plastic ball and wooden bat. The game emulates running cricket in an environment where physically disabled young people can thrive.
VEC captain, Dan Cook, said ‘It’s brilliant to win the Lord’s Taverners 2014 National Table Cricket Finals. We train every week and have worked really hard, progressing through qualifiers, regionals and now the finals here at Lord’s. It means so much to play at such an iconic venue and I would encourage anyone, no matter the severity of their disability to sign up to play next year.’
Cricketing superstars Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara made a surprise appearance and gave some valuable advice to students, they even managed to have a bat with one of the schools.
The finals were part of VEC’s larger Sports Week which took part between 23rd – 27th June. Other events included a sponsored walk, the Grand Prix Day; where the students got the opportunity to sit in super cars, along with their Golden Goggles swimming gala.
