We’re celebrating Rebecca’s achievement of completing a 5000–metre walking challenge within 25 days, overcoming disability barriers to raise vital funds for the charity.
Rebecca, a resident at Livability Hallgate, Hexham, was inspired by Captain Tom Moore’s walk to raise funds for the NHS. She has now walked to raise over £1,300 (including gift aid). The funds raised by Rebecca’s challenge go to Livability’s emergency coronavirus appeal, to provide essential PPE to our care services and continued quality support for disabled people.
Rebecca’s mobility is severely limited by cerebral palsy, but despite her difficulties, Rebecca was highly motivated to take on the 2.6 challenge, walking 200.6 metres every day for 25 days.
Rebecca walked around the garden at Livability Hallgate, supported by all the staff and keyworkers at the home and enthusiastic housemates. Her condition means that she does not express much in words but when asked how she felt about the challenge she took on, she had a huge smile on her face and laughed and shouted with delight. Watch the video below to see Rebecca expressing that she is feeling happy and fit, and on top of the world, as she proudly holds up a copy of her story in the local paper with her story in the local paper.
‘On behalf of everybody at Livability,we would like to say a big thank you to you Rebecca, we are very proud,’ says her keyworker Paul. ‘We’d like to thank all of the support team and the people who live here at Livability Hallgate that got involved to support. It has been an epic challenge, it’s been fantastic!’
Michelle Earle, service manager for Livability Hallgate, expressed her praise:
‘I would like to say how proud I am of Rebecca and all the staff team for supporting and enabling her through the challenge. Rebecca is an inspiration and she has completed an amazing challenge and raised a substantial amount for Livability which we are all very grateful for.’
The challenge was part of Livability’s involvement in the nationwide 2.6 challenge, set up to support charities hard hit by cancelled fundraising events, including the London Marathon.
Rebecca is over the moon as she has smashed her initial fundraising target of £260 by £1,000!. Generous sponsors are still donating in support of Rebecca’s amazing challenge; you can still donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rebeccas-s-2-6-challenge
