Ten years ago, doors opened for the very first time at Livability Kenway Court – a residential home in Southend-on-Sea. To celebrate its 10th anniversary we spoke to Service Manager Dianne Alexander about this significant milestone.
Having been at Kenway Court from the very beginning, Dianne has great memories of the opening: ‘I can vividly remember the day we moved all the residents from their former residence in for the first time in 2007. I had this bright idea of moving everyone in on the same day on Monday 8th January and then we had a retirement party on the Friday for two staff members who had been working with us since the eighties. As you can imagine it was a busy week!’
Kenway Court is a residential care and nursing home for 24 disabled adults, including those with profound physical disabilities. Each resident has a very spacious flat with large sitting room and bedroom area, kitchenette and en-suite shower room.
‘The care we provide is very diverse and complex,’ says Dianne. ‘Our residents also range in age, some are in their early twenties while others are well into their seventies.’
Because of the age range, the residents have developed a large family dynamic – children, aunts and uncles, brother and sisters, granddads and grandmas.
At the residents’ monthly meetings they all discuss what they’d like to do and the places they’d like to go. There’s plenty to experience in the vibrant community in Southend-on-Sea and beyond. One of the younger residents spends a lot of time at The O2 in South East London, Dianne told us: ‘One of her favourite bands were playing there recently, so she decided to see them perform three or four nights in a row!’

‘We have a brilliant staff team who care about Kenway Court and go the extra mile for the residents, and that really makes a real difference,’ says Dianne.
When people visit Kenway Court they always feel that it’s a very homely and welcoming atmosphere. ‘We make sure the care we provide is the standard we’d like to receive ourselves or that we’d want our relatives to receive,’ says Dianne. ‘The needs of the residents are always changing and it’s really important to us that the residents here have a fulfilling life. I think in the next ten years to come, this will continue.’
To celebrate Kenway Court’s 10th anniversary, the staff organised a party for the residents and their families. There was a chance to socialise with the residents’ loved ones and a singer performed songs through all the ten years between 2007 and 2017.
