Equipment and aids
Many types of physical support aids can be obtained through the NHS, but equipment that makes it easier to manage at home is normally provided by the Social Services Department of your local authority.
Useful equipment includes:
- Kettle tippers or tap turners to help in the kitchen.
- Furniture raisers for raising the height of chairs and beds for help with sitting up.
- Handrails and supports for assisting movement.
- Door entry systems that are easier to use than traditional handles.
- Communication aids, for help with using telephones and computers.
People preparing to live independently can also visit a Disabled Living Centre, which give advice and offer the chance to try out a range of products to suit their needs.
