Bradbury Court in Harrow, northwest London, is an innovative home for disabled adults that provides at least 30 square metres of living space for each of its 21 residents.
The building has been designed to be fully accessible. Corridors and lifts are wide enough for residents to reach all the communal areas by wheelchair or, for people who need to spend time reclining, by bed. Colours, signs and voice announcements have all been carefully developed to help people get around with ease.
The layout of each flat is flexible, comprising of a bed-sitting area, a small kitchen area and en suite shower room with WC. Rooms can be opened up with connecting doors and the heights of the surfaces can be adjusted.
Residents enjoy both privacy and independence. Staff deliver support appropriate to individual care packages and they will always seek permission before entering a private room. Special contact points throughout the building mean that staff can be contacted easily.
Regular meetings encourage everyone to become involved in the running of the home, sharing views on how to maintain its atmosphere and ethos.
A full-time events organiser provides opportunities for service user interests and activities. Events include a programme of in-house activities and days out. Games and computers with internet access are available in the activities room. Harrow town centre is within easy reach and Bradbury Court has two wheelchair accessible vehicles.
