Livability Research area
We carry out a continual programme of research with the aim of:
- Increasing awareness and understanding of disability and its effects
- Improving services so that they better meet the needs of the disabled people we work with
- Making an informed contribution to national policy debates
Past research
Some of the research that we have concluded in the past years covers:
- The impact of medical advances on the survival, treatment, prognoses, needs and expectations of people with disabilities
- Patterns of care and their impact on lifestyles and ambitions
- Unmet needs and the potential for personal development
- Issues affecting care models, such as the built environment, aids, smart technology, staff skill mixes, training and the status and supply of care staff, nurses and therapists
- Patterns in, and continuity of care over lifetimes and the potential for improved planning and co-ordination between services
- Policy issues affecting the environment within which people with disabilities live and in which care services are supplied
Recent research
Recent research has looked at a range of issues such as:
- The readiness of local authorities in relation to the personalisation agenda and individual budgets
- Factors affecting disabled people's holiday choices
- The impact of vocational training on employment and
- The care of people with disabilities in hospital
Local populations have been analysed in terms of lifestyles and the UK population in terms of health and service opportunities. Individual studies of our care homes have enabled us to contrast our experiences with regional trends in service availability, fees and care models.
Working in partnership
We frequently carry out research with other organisations and share all our research findings as widely as possible with appropriate stakeholders to maximise benefit to people with disabilities.
We welcome any queries about findings, suggestions or proposals for shared research. They should be addressed to Rachael Christophides our campaigns and media manager. You can contact Rachael by submitting an online form or rchristophides@livability.org.uk.
