A Royal Visit for Northamptonshires Hinwick Hall College
Leading disability charity Livability's Patron Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited Hinwick Hall College, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, on 24th June 2010.
During the visit Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal opened a new sensory studio, visited refurbished student residential accommodation and unveiled a commemorative paving stone to mark her visit. She also visited the college's art room where students took part in a 2012 Olympics themed workshop.
The Livability-run college is a leading specialist day and residential college and welcomes up to 60 students with learning disabilities aged 16 to 24 years. It is based in Hinwick, Wellingborough, Northants NN29 7JD.
The college's new sensory studio has a variety of equipment and elements that can stimulate the students and help them to become more aware of their surroundings. It will help students develop language skills and improve hand/eye coordination as well as helping them remain focused and achieve calmness. All of these will allow the students to work towards full potential and to have the confidence to become part of a community. Students leave Hinwick Hall having developed skills which will support them in living with as much independence as each is able to achieve.
The following trusts donated towards the full cost of the room: The Band Trust, Bruce Wake Charity, The Neighbourly Trust, Scott Bader, NPower, Elaine Barratt.
The refurbishment of the Robinson Unit was completed in September 2009, thanks to generous donations, and has provided residents with two brand new three-bedroom flats and one two-bedroom flat.
Liz Auchincloss, Hinwick Hall College Principal, said, "We are delighted that Her Royal Highness honored us with her presence. Hinwick Hall College is a very special place, and we are very excited about the latest developments on the campus."
Hinwick Hall College strongly believes that all students have the potential to make choices about their lives and be proactive in directing a lifestyle of their choice.
The visit was also attended by: the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Mr Samuel Whitbread, the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, Mr Daniel Hanbury, the Speaker of Bedford Borough Council, Cllr Mrs Margaret Davey the Chief Constable of Bedfordshire, Mrs Gillian Parker.
