York House bike ride a great success

18/06/2010

A bike ride organised on 6 June to help fund a refurbishment project at York House, Ossett, West Yorkshire, a local centre that cares for 18 residents with a variety of disabilities, has proved a great success.

Residents and staff of the Livability-run centre have so far raised £1,600 and the much needed funds will be used to complete the crucial refurbishment of the much-loved centre.

YorK House bike ride

Members of staff, alongside family and friends gathered to start the 68 mile bike ride from York House grounds at 7.30 am on the day, as the centre residents cheered them on.

At 8am four cars & eight riders set off in cloudy conditions to start their challenge and by 10am it was raining heavily. Undeterred the fundraisers relished the challenge that took them all around the Halifax area. The ride was completed by 5.30pm when the group was warmly received by the residents who came out into the rain to welcome them back to York House

Helen Holt York House Manager said: Our bike ride was the perfect opportunity for us to raise awareness of our refurbishment project. Everyone who took part ended the ride very tired, absolutely soaked, but also extremely proud of such a huge personal achievement. We would like to thank everyone who supported the ride and also remind people that it is not to late to help us fund the project!

Through their own sheer ingenuity and dedication, staff and residents have already managed to refurbish and improve the entrance, living room and loos of the 1960s building without any outside help. Residents used eBay as a way to source affordable furniture and successfully bid for the items they were keen to acquire. They also enjoyed choosing the design and colour schemes of the rooms and helped with the necessary DYI.

York House, based in Ossett West Yorkshire, prides itself in its friendly community atmosphere and offers complete 24-hour care is of the highest quality. The home caters for people aged 18-65 with very complex needs and with varying degrees or levels of disabilities. Emma Denny, support worker at York House, worked tirelessly to organize the bike ride event and staff hope that the event will be a success.
